Flaxseed during pregnancy – properties

Flaxseed is one of the best sources of dietary fibre, which is essential for the proper functioning of the digestive tract. Flaxseed also provides omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are especially recommended during pregnancy. In addition, it contains numerous micro and macro elements as well as protein and amino acids. For this reason, flaxseed is counted among the so-called superfoods, i.e. natural foods that supply the body with many different nutrients.

Flaxseed during pregnancy – Applications

Flax seeds are most commonly consumed in the form of seeds used in salads or other meals, or drunk after soaking in water. Pregnant women tend to use flax seeds for constipation, heartburn and nausea. The fibre content speeds up the peristalsis of the digestive tract, which is slowed down during pregnancy, and the discomfort can be relieved.

Ground flaxseed can also be used in baked goods such as bread. Some people also use it in cooking as a substitute for eggs in various vegetable shreds and in a form similar to breadcrumbs.

Flaxseed has also found its way into hair cosmetics. Recently, it has become increasingly popular to make your own hair mask, called flaxseed balm, which has moisturising and softening properties.

Is flaxseed safe during pregnancy?

All home and natural methods that an expectant mother wishes to use should always be discussed with a gynaecologist. Flaxseed has not been shown to have any negative effects on the development of pregnancy and the baby, but its possible side effects should be considered. These include, for example, diarrhoea, which occurs when too much flaxseed is consumed. In addition, flax seeds absorb water very well, so you must make sure you drink enough fluids when eating raw seeds. It is also always advisable to buy products from trustworthy organic shops so that the seeds are not additionally contaminated.
